Previously, I had been tagged by Lori at http://shesawake.com in a Movie Meme. So here we go, let’s play tag again. Music is part of me, and here are 10 little random facts about me and music.
1. If you’ve read my past blog, you know that my music playing is based on my mood. But sometimes, my mood can actually be based off the music. Certain songs can trigger emotions in me faster than the speed of light. When I was little, my mom avoided specific music she liked while with me, simply because she knew it draw me downward. But at the same time, she also knew what music to play when she wanted my mood to rise quickly. It’s the same today. Sometimes I can force myself a different direction just by picking a certain playlist. Oh, a word of advice, don’t play Prince’s Purple Rain around me.
2. I look pretty rock or punkish. And I am. I love that music more than anything. But dig deeper inside me, and yes, you’ll find a Country girl. I’m from the country, it’s a given. It doesn’t matter if they are singing about heartache, true love, fishing, or even their dog, they still sing it with so much passion. I love the song The Boondocks from Little Big Town for this reason. I know where I came from.
3. I do not fully censor my children from strong music. Granted, I do not play songs like Fuck Me Like You Hate Me by Seether for them. But they do know most of Nine Inch Nails, Godsmack, other Seether, and Korn. I wasn’t censored. I do not buy any music that is censored. Why? You’ve nothing to gain, and you’ll not experience the emotions behind the songs. If you are feeling something, you say it. You do not censor yourself, so why your music? My kids know what curse words are. They know that some people use them, and that they shouldn’t. You shape them, not the lyrics.
4. I want to be *that* girl. The girl in these songs: Maggie May by Rod Stewart, Ruby Tuesday by The Rolling Stones, and the nameless girl in T-Rex’s Get It On. I want to be “dirty and sweet.” And I want to be loved for it. They are normal women, but there is something about them that make these men love them. Granted, it is just a song. But I want to be her.
5. I have a bass. I love my bass. I cannot play it. I took a few lessons when I first got it, and was on my way. Then, I became pregnant. Then I lived with my grandparents. I’d love to play it, but I believe I am tone death. I can’t just pick it up and play a song by ear. And forget singing. I have a good voice, but I am so off-key it sounds horrible. Yes, with a lot of practice I can do it. But do not ask me to just out and sing something for you. I’m better at listening and feeling than I am at doing.
6. Meatloaf. Yes, Meatloaf. I love his music. Mom used to play the Bat Our Of Hell album a lot. Actually that is an understatement. We listened to that more than anything. Can you imagine a 9 year-old singing Paradise By The Dashboard Light? I also did this with the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack. Yeah “Toucha toucha touch me…. I wanna feel dirty. Thrill me, chill me fulfill me… Creature of the night.”
7. I hate associating songs with people, but it happens. And not usually because of me, but because of them. I was with my one ex for 3 1/2 years. Because he had been living with his parents, we didn’t have a lot of privacy. This lead to a lot of late night drives into the middle of fields for some parking time. I had a cassette single at the time that we’d just put in and let play over and over. Yes, I said cassette single. They were cheaper, and I didn’t have a cd player in my car. Anyway, I loved the two songs on it. Even now, 8 years later I still love them. I’d even pushed aside the fact that we listened to them while having sex. And then he started messaging me again. And for some unknown reason he felt the need to bring those up. So now, he associates them with me. And I feel guilty listening to them freely.
8. Because of my kids, our pets have ended up with cartoon character names. Mostly, I still had full say in our dog’s name. But before I had children, my pets were named solely for music. Luka was for Susan Vega’s My Name is Luka. Marley was almost Dylan, or Morrison. Mary Jane for Tom Petty. Vedder. Pink for Pink Floyd. Lucy for the Beatles. And of course Mojo, in honor of “Mr. Mojo Risin’.”
9. The song Landslide from Fleetwood Mac is the only song I happily associate with someone. Stevie Nicks is singing to her daddy in that song. I automatically think of my Pappy. I built my life around him more than I realized. Sometimes I feel as if that world is still crumbling away, 5 years after his death. But he is still here. And every time I hear that song, he is fresh in my head.
10. I dance. Not very well, and not in public. Unless an awful lot of alcohol is involved. But I dance here, in my living room daily. My son’s and crank up the music and just go. And not that graceful, we are learning to dance in public type of thing. It is a go wild, jump, twist, and flail your body however. I’ve even been known to wield an invisible microphone or air guitar. It’s just how we do things here.
So there you are. 10 random facts with me and music. Hey guys? You’re it.
